K Joseph Mohatt Wins Second Place at WPPI

Las Vegas: On March 4 at the 2015 Wedding and Portrait Photographers International conference it was announced that Denver-based Elati photographer K. Joseph Mohatt won second place in the acclaimed print competition.

Each year, more than 14,000 photographers from throughout the world gather at WPPI to compete for honors, to share knowledge about photography and to try out the latest in camera technology.

The WPPI conference is highlighted by the 16×20 print competition in which thousands of pictures are judged by some of the industry’s most renowned photographers. For two days, dozens of judges meticulously critique thousands of images often engaging in polite disagreement about what distinguishes a excellent picture from an industry standard image.

Categories in the competition range from wedding photography to fashion to photojournalism. It was in the photojournalism category that K. Joseph Mohatt captured second place among a highly talented group of photographers.

WPPI defines a photojournalistic image as one that is “captured with no interference from anyone and should reflect a moment in time that was simply captured but not created.“

Mohatt’s winning photo was of a woman delivering a child in her home. The image captured the peak of emotion on the woman’s face 18 hours into labor as her midwife attempts to advance the birth of her child.

By placing in the top three at WPPI, K. Joseph Mohatt joins the company of the world’s top photographers. “This is truly an honor that I feel humbled to accept,” says Mohatt. “Though next year, I’ll shoot for first,” he continues with a smile.
